Remix specializes in thought leadership, focused on speaking and podcast guest placements. This is the second in a series about how to get and maximize podcast guest opportunities.
Appearing as a guest on a notable podcast gives you credibility and shows you are a thought leader with expertise to share with listeners. With more than 5 million podcasts worldwide as of 2024, there is bound to be a few that would welcome you as a guest to share your thoughts and big thinking. Here are some tips from Remix to help you become a podcast guest. But once you secure a spot as a guest, how can you be the best you can be? Here are some tips from Remix, based on our years of placing our clients as guests on top podcasts:
- Listen to a few episodes if you’re not already a regular listener. You’ll learn about the podcast host and their style, and the types of questions you’re likely to be asked.
- Do you have the right equipment? As a podcast listener, there’s nothing worse than hearing a guest who has bad audio. Don’t be that guest. Experiment in advance to be sure you have the best mic for the job. Here are a few recommended mics to consider.
- Have a good background. In addition to posting their podcasts on the usual channels (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc.), many podcasters also post on YouTube and their own websites. Make sure your background that will be on camera looks great in the frame. This means no piles of paper, and no distracting or misplaced items on the shelf behind you. The simpler the better.
- Make sure you are camera ready. How do your clothes (and makeup if you wear it) look from the chest up? Is your top distracting? We suggest bright, solid colors that show well on camera.
- Do you have stories ready to share? The most interesting guests have great anecdotes to share from their personal experience.
- Podcasts are conversations with guests, so keep in mind that it should be easy and conversational, and not a stressful interview.
- Show your support for the podcast by sharing/liking/commenting on the podcast when it goes live. Social capital is gold for podcasters and a way to measure reach/impact. It also gives you a perfect opportunity to underscore that you’re a thought leader.
Above all, enjoy your opportunity to share your wisdom on a podcast and have fun with the process!
